Why We Need Bees

  • Introducing more native plants will increase the biodiversity (which is what keeps an ecosystem healthy) and will also reduce the amount of water we take out of the Bow River through native xeriscape(zeer-i-skape) gardening.

    • This term describes the use of native plants that do not require an excessive amount of water because they have adapted to our environment throughout the years- this means you will save water

  • Our solution will go beyond your backyard, as will bees fly 1-6km from their nest when collecting pollen

  • Through increased pollination, bees will aid in the reproduction of riparian plants (the interface between land and water), which, over time will help limit the erosion of our river banks

  • The healthier riparian area is also beneficial to our water quality. Plants are able to reduce the runoff of harmful chemicals into the river by slowing the flow rate. These run-offs are actually poisonous to many forms of aquatic life which results in slow development or even death. Not to mention the effects they have on our drinking water.

Without Bees.
