Why They're Disappearing

  • Bee populations are declining worldwide for several reasons

  • Neonicotinoid pesticides kill what consumes any part of the plant including pollen

    • These are used on corn, canola, soya beans and ornamental flowers. 

  • If it doesn’t kill the bees, it affects their foraging abilities so they can’t do their job

  • Monocultures, crops containing only one plant, lead to nutrient deficiencies and poor immune systems

  • In the city many flowers are not the right shape for bees, are unavailable at crucial times or produce little to no pollen; these are not native

    • For example, bees cannot acess the pollen inside flowers in which the petals form from long tunnels because they cannot fit inside

    • Pansie and double bagonias do not produce any pollen at all, making them useless to bees. 

  • Accessible water sources in the city are scarce because bees need islands to land on
